Kingdom Hearts 4 was announced this weekend by Square Enix and Disney, with the companies confirming the news during the Kingdom Hearts 20th anniversary. It has been confirmed that the footage from the reveal was running on Unreal Engine 4. However, Famitsu (thanks PSU) is reporting that the final release of Kingdom Hearts 4 could run on Unreal Engine 5. The development team are apparently testing the game on both engines.

Square Enix has already confirmed another of its projects will be running on Unreal Engine 5, and that is the next Tomb Raider. Here’s how Square Enix have described the new tale: “In the announcement trailer, Sora makes a triumphant return with an updated look at the beginning of an epic new storyline titled the “Lost Master Arc.” Beginning with Sora facing off in a boss battle against a giant enemy, players are introduced to the Quadratum, a large, expansive city set in a gorgeous, realistic world unlike anything ever seen before in the KINGDOM HEARTS series. Fans will be excited to see the return of Sora’s well-known companions Donald and Goofy, in addition to the first appearance of Strelitzia, a mysterious new character who appears before Sora in this strange new setting.”

Looking back on the last mainline game, Square Enix finally wrapped up the main trilogy story arc with the release of Kingdom Hearts 3 in 2019 and the DLC that followed. In our Kingdom Hearts 3 review, Jim said: “Kingdom Hearts III doesn’t go in the direction some RPG fans will no doubt have been hoping for. It’s unashamedly over the top in just about every way, from its barmy story and stunning presentation to its huge cinematic battles. There’s plenty of depth here too, though you’ll need to find your bearings first.”

No release date or platforms have been confirmed for Kingdom Hearts 4.
